4 Tips for the Traveling Smoker Header

Traveling as a smoker doesn’t have to be a stressful experience. In fact, it should be the opposite. Good thing that with the right mindset and proper preparations, you can enjoy your dream vacation, worry free - whether it be a chill day trip or cross country journey. Our five travel tips for smokers highlight the major do’s and don’ts, including must have products, for smokers who want to have a successfully blazing vacation.

Tip 1 - Keep It Clean

Let’s cover the basics first: don’t travel with pipes on you. The problem with carrying pipes outside of the home is that dirty pipes (and what pipes aren’t?) almost always have smelly and messy residue. Smell is an easy giveaway and definitely something to avoid. If you must bring your favorite pipe with you on vacation, then make sure you clean your piece very thoroughly… Then repeat.

When traveling, it’s best to pack disposable products so you can easily toss them or leave them at your hotel with no regrets. The most foolproof, and of course, tried and true option is to use rolling papers or cones. The OG method of smoking is still the go to choice for many smokers because they are easy to travel with, disposable, and cheap.

If you still haven’t learned how to use rolling papers, or just prefer to use a pipe, the Presto Pipe is a newly popular alternative smoking method that can turn any can or bottle into a pipe! The Presto Pipe is very affordable which is good to know in case you need to ditch it if you’re in a pinch. Essentially, the Presto Pipe is a compact, disposable smoking accessory that is perfect for the green-minded smoker.

Now that you have a way to smoke your herbs, you need a way to grind them up without bringing along a traditional herb grinder, which can be clunky, heavy, and leaves the residue of previously ground up herbs. We recommend investing in a shredder card, which allows you to grind your legal smoking herbs and can be stored in a wallet. To the unsuspecting eye, the shredder card looks just like a credit card and is unlikely to be questioned. This is a great alternative to other herb grinders while traveling.

To help keep your travel kit clean and ash free, we suggest adding a pocket ashtray to your smoking travel kit. When it comes to packing disposable and compact items to travel with, the pocket ashtray is a great option because it eliminates any ash or evidence that may remain after you smoke. The best part about carrying one of these around is that you can throw it away in a pinch.

Tip 2 - Keep It Hidden

Hide your kids, hide your wife, and hide your stash. First and foremost, always exercise caution while traveling with smoking herbs. You and you alone are responsible for knowing the local laws and what type of smoking herbs are legal in each location you travel to. However, there are many discreet ways of keeping your goods hidden so you don’t draw unwanted attention to yourself.

Your wacky uncle Kevin might have a few stories about where he and his bandmates hid their stash during his caravan days, like in the spare tire, or under a loose floorboard. While these spots might have worked for him, smoking culture has evolved enough to where you don’t have to deconstruct your car in order to feel like your goods won’t get snatched. First up is the leaf lock case. Waterproof, smell proof, and discreet, this tough little box is sure to keep your stash safe. It looks like a mini briefcase and can be stored in a glovebox, middle car console, under the seat, packed in a suitcase or backpack.

However, if you’re in a pinch, there are other options, like using your underwear for a hiding spot. Have you ever asked your girlfriend to hold someone for you, only to find out she was “holding it” in her bra? Smart lady. The bra is a good place to store and hide your stash, vape, money, credit cards… The list is endless, really. Hide your goods in your bra basically the same way you would in an underwear pocket. Tuck it away like it’s no one’s business.

Remember this tip if nothing else: don’t take more than you need. Stick to packing the bare necessities and make sure to double check your packing list. In addition to your daily essentials, like a toothbrush, clothes, shoes and an extra pair of socks, make sure to pack your smoking kit, filled with your favorite, and preferably disposable, smoking gear. Travel bundles such as the Sweet and Juicy Bundle, Raw PreRolled Tips Tin Bundle, and the Campers Day Out are all a great option, or you can make your own kit. Every smoker’s travel kit should include:

  1. Rolling papers or cones
  2. Lighter and/or hemp wick
  3. Mini grinder or shredder card
  4. Smell proof bag or jar to hold your herbs
  5. Odor neutralizer

Remember that the goal is to keep your smoker travel kit to a minimum. Don’t pack unnecessary extras and keep your kit small enough to carry your stash in a backpack, glove box, purse or other light options.

Tip 3 - Keep It Fresh

Nothing is more of a dead giveaway than smelling something that is… off. This goes for when you’re traveling or at home. You need to have methods readily available to eliminate the smell your smoke sessions produce. While you’re smoking, the Smoke Buddy, a personal smoke filter, helps dilute the smell of your smoke. It is a fast and easy option available for purchase and is a good piece of gear to throw into your carry-on. If you want to take a homemade or DIY method for covering smell, you can take an empty toilet paper roll, cover one end with a dryer sheet and secure it with a rubber band or hair tie. Exhale your smoke through the tube and it will come out the other side smelling like fresh laundry!

If you’re looking for a spray to help with the smell of many things, not just smoke, we suggest using Ozium. This spray helps eliminate odors like dirty laundry, shoes, gym bags, and yes, smoke too. This is a great trick to have up your sleeve on trips, or for everyday use, especially in your car.

If you’ll be driving with legal smoking herbs in your car or in your backpack you’ll want them to be in a sealed bag or jar that helps eliminate the smell. We suggest using the Leaf Lock UV Jar for this since they come in different sizes depending on your needs and aren’t expensive. Better to be safe than sorry when it comes to storing your smoking herbs and the smell they can produce.

Don’t forget to smoke outside and away from busy areas. Places with lots of open air space are ideal because the smoke will evaporate quickly and the smell won’t be trapped in one area. Most hotels have smoking friendly rooms too, which is a great option and usually doesn’t cost any extra.

Tip 4 - Keep It Safe

Don’t drive while under the influence! Period. Being under the influence and driving is not only illegal, but it is also just plain dumb. When you drive under the influence, you are not only putting yourself at risk for an accident, or a hefty ticket and legal issues, you’re also putting your passengers and the other people on the road around you in harm’s way. Luckily, there are plenty of smart and safe ways to stay off the roads when you’re partying, like having a DD. Elect a designated driver every single time you and your friends go out or find a friend who’s willing to drive you and your buds around for the night. Playing a game like pulling straws or “light the Zippo” is a fun a fair way to see who gets to be the chauffeur for the night. Then, start rotating the DD duty amongst yourselves for future nights out. It’s a small price to pay for keeping your friends (and you) safe and out of trouble.

If your buddy graciously offers to drive you and your friends around for a night of partying, make sure their thoughtfulness is rewarded by "tipping" them with a pre-roll or two to enjoy after they get everyone home safe and sound.

However, since it is the 21st century and your only option isn't a horse drawn carriage, there are many convenient options to safely get around; taxis, limos, or a rideshare service like Lyft and Uber. No need to hassle with the rental car pick up/drop off times, or trying to find the cheapest place to get gas before you return it. Using a rideshare service is so easy, it’s almost a chore to go out of your way not to use one. Just make sure you have one of the rideshare apps downloaded and ready to go before your trip, since you don’t know what the internet situation will be when you get off the plane in a new place.
